I’m excited to host Christine Fonseca today on her tour for the release of her novella Dies Irae. I remember having dinner with Christine a while back and we talked about some of our projects. And when she spoke about the story, both Dies Irae and her upcoming book Lacrimosa, which are a part of her Requiem Series, her face lit up. Thanks LK for hosting a leg of the blog tour for DIES IRAE. When I was deciding what to write for this post, I thought I’d talk a little about writing the “dark stuff”. As you can tell from the opening quote, I am a firm believer than we have a shadow-side capable of horrible atrocities. This is nothing new. Simply turn on the news and you can see some of the worst that humanity has to offer. But why do I want to write about it? Why even go there?

For me, I write the dark stuff as a way of understanding that aspect of humanity, and in doing so allow others to understand it too. It is sort of my version of being some great exploring on a quest. As a writer, I get to excavate all of human emotion, take it apart, look at it. In doing so, I no longer fear those elements of humanity, at least not in the same way.

So, how do I achieve this lofty goal of looking at all aspects of humanity and writing about that experience? How do I embrace my own shadow and enable myself to write about the dark stuff? The answer for me is in the question—I embrace my shadow. Literally. So I create dark characters, complex characters, tortured characters. I try to see the world through their eyes, understand the motivation behind their crimes. I let their voices seep into my thoughts. And then, I write their stories. For me, it is the only way to stay authentic in my writing. And every time I get scared to “go there”, every time I pull myself back, I smile because I know I am getting to the good stuff…the root of human nature. So I jump back into the story. And keep writing.

Before I end, I want to share one more quote from Jung:

If you imagine someone who is brave enough to withdraw all his projections, then you get an individual who is conscious of a pretty thick shadow. Such a man has saddled himself with new problems and conflicts. He has become a serious problem to himself, as he is now unable to say that they do this or they do that, they are wrong, and they must be fought against. He lives in the “House of Gathering.” Such a man knows that whatever is wrong with the world is in himself, and if he only learns to deal with his own shadow, he has done something real for the world. He has succeeded in shouldering at least an infinitesimal part of the gigantic, unsolved social problems of our day.

Helping a Friend Help Others

I have a friend I met on Twitter (@cvaldezmiller), when I was fairly new to the twittershpere. My friendship with Carolina Valdez Miller has grown over the years because she is a genuine caring person. And to show you how much she cares, she is going on a medical mission to Haiti in January and needs some help. A few dollars here and there will help her to help so many. It is the putting of self last to reach out and help those in need which shows her mettle. I encourage you to take a look at her post on her blog and read about her passion for helping others. I love book releases. There is something special about all of the efforts the author made finally coming together and having them share their inspiration with the world. And the release of a debut novel is even more special. Knowing the writer is finally seeing the end product and is sharing something so intimate with the world for the first time. Because the book writing process is an intimate one and I know from personal experience, the blood, sweat, and tears that go into the process. WOW! Something tells me the fate of Earth might be tied to Eren. And who can resist a charming boy named, Aiden? But since this is the Tour of Secrets there must BE secrets involved…and my secret I’m going to reveal is related to Aiden, but not about him.

I got it from the secret master, herself, Heather McCorkle. Aiden’s adoptive father, Virgil is abusive — and it’s tough to have any sympathy at all for him. What he tries to hide is that he (and his wife) desperately wanted to have children, but it is becoming increasingly difficult for channelers to have children. After years of trying they became so desperate that they adopted Aiden (how I can’t tell you, that’s another secret!). But shortly after the adoption, Virgil’s wife became pregnant. That certainly complicated Virgil’s feelings about Aiden!

Awwww!!!! I was having so much fun celebrating Carol’s agent representation, I almost forgot the party had to come to an end. But someone let the air out of the balloons, so now it’s time to clean up the confetti. I love to throw it – the sparkly kind always – but hate to clean it up. Have you ever noticed how it gets everywhere??? Where’s the janitorial service when you need it? But I don’t have to be too sad, because NOW I can give stuff away. YAY!!!!

The Challenge: 140 Characters – One Pitch

I had just finished up my Middle Grade novel, polished it up and sent it off on a request when I saw something floating past in my Twitter stream. I snatched it up quick before it ran too far down river and here’s what I found. Shelley Watters (@Shelley_Watters) reached some milestones, 100 followers on her blog and 500 twitter followers, and she felt like celebrating. So she roped in the fantasic Suzie Townsend of Fine Print Literary Management to be a judge for a contest. The prize??? A full manuscript request by Suzie. And Shelley will provide query critiques for another lucky five.

The catch? Pitch your book with the same restrictions we have on twitter – 140 characters. Whoa!! There are times I can barely say hello in 140 characters… pitch a whole book?? I thought about sitting this one out, but then decided to jump in the deep end for two reasons.

A friend dared me (yes, we have Monica Enderle Pierce to thank for my participation in this contest) because I can’t back down from a challenge.
And the ability to have a short snippet I can pull out and use when someone asks me the question I never cease to stumble over… “What is the book about?” Once I’m in a conversation about my writing, I’m able to discuss fluently, but I always trip over my tongue when attempting to give someone a short summation.

So I signed up and started off on my quest of perfecting a pitch in 140 characters. I had a bit of a slow start but ultimately came up with something I’m almost happy with – I’d like to get a descriptive adjective in there, but may need a shoe horn to do it. Oh, and I thought about tweet-shrinking my pitch, but decided to go for the gusto and complete the pitch without shrinking. Sooooo, here it is:

Title: The Journal of Angela Ashby
Genre: Middle Grade contemporary with magical elements
44,000 words

When her magical journal falls into a bully’s hands, a girl must sacrifice her deepest desire to protect her unborn brother’s happiness

In a nutshell and 135 characters… but, I’ll probably continue to tweak – leave a comment & help me make it sparkle.
